Juror's Statement
"It is my great honor to serve as the juror for the 18th Annual National Juried Exhibition. My sincere thanks go to Georgina Goodlander, Visual Arts Director, for this invaluable opportunity to witness firsthand the artistic talent from our local community and across the nation.
"This year’s open call received 301 submissions, from which only 62 works were selected for the final exhibition—a deeply challenging process. I thank every artist who submitted their work: I reviewed every single piece with great care. The final selection was constrained by the gallery’s physical space, with the included works making up roughly one-fifth of all submissions. To artists not featured in this show, I strongly encourage you to keep creating and exhibiting. Exclusion here is never a judgment of your work’s quality or value. A juror’s perspective is inherently subjective and limited; your work still holds the power to resonate in other spaces, even more competitive ones. Please keep sharing your moving art with the world.
"In making my selections, I intentionally prioritized diversity across mediums, genres, and creative approaches, balancing classical and contemporary practices to craft a dynamic, inclusive show for audiences. I deeply admire artists who work across mediums, and it is a privilege to bring together the wide-ranging talents and unique artistic perspectives of all exhibiting artists.
"I hold equal regard for both representational and non-representational work, whether it reflects the beauty of the outer world or the depth of our inner lives. I am thrilled by the abstract beauty within realist works, awed by the ineffable, sacred quality of monochromatic and black-and-white pieces, and humbled by artists who reimagine natural materials through remarkable creativity and technique. For me, art is the interaction between humans and this sacred world; ultimately, art is solace from the universe. I was delighted to see artists explore philosophical ideas through both figurative and abstract forms; moved by works that stir tender emotions and reveal our shared humanity; impressed by the exquisite technique of classical works; and inspired by the intentional or unexpected abstract elements within many pieces. Every piece here tells a story—one lived by the artist, or discovered by them.
"Congratulations to all the exhibiting artists. Thank you for sharing your inspiration, talent, and courage with me and every visitor to this show.
"And to you, dear viewer, I ask you to slow down. Pause for a moment with each piece. Enjoy its formative beauty, listen to its quiet message, and open yourself to the comfort and emotion this viewing experience can bring."
